Come to Lampang to have a look at the past. Ruled by the Burmese for a over 200 years, the temples and the monuments here portray a fine blend of Thai and Burmese architecture, escaping the crude modernization of the recent times. Some of the major temples that you can consider visiting are Wat Chedi Sao (Temple of Twenty Chedis), the Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang and the Wat Phrathat Chom Ping. Besides there is an Elephant Conservation Centre, the Doi Khuntan National Park and the Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao are worth your visit. While the Wat Phra Kaeo Don Tao is one of the best examples of Burmese architecture that dates back to the late 18th century, the Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang is one of North's finest temples with Chedi towers surrounded by trees. The centre is situated in Ban Tung Kiewn, Amphoe Hang Chat, 32 kms from the Chiang Mai Highway and offers elephant riding to the tourist.
To arrive at Lampang of Thailand, one could take regular buses from Chiang Mai or travel by train from either Bangkok or Chiang Mai. To get around in the city try there are tuk-tuks and samlors. While these can take you to any of the city and comes pretty cheap, taking a ride in the pony carriages is fun. Sine tried by most tourists the carriages are charged on an hourly basis and are much expensive than the usual transportation. However, they are a unique feature that is worth trying once.
